Chain mail legs became a standard part of the medieval armour in the 11th century. The time of maille began and a warrior was clad head to toe in chain mail, from the coif, the long sleeved chain mail shirt (Hauberk)and mittens to chain mail legs. Only with the appearance of the first plate armour parts the maille armour slowly vanished. Chain mail legs could be worn in two different ways. Long padded legs could be worn under it or shorter padded legs that covered the leg down to the knee were used. These came in varieties of leather knee caps or steel knee caps.
